Manitowaning "Home of the Great Spirit"
Manitowaning has recreation facilities to help visitors enjoy fishing, water sports, hiking or relaxation. B-Zone skate park features ramps, rails and table tops for boards, blades and bikes beside the tennis courts. Rainbow Ridge Golf Course has a contoured, 18-hole course, driving range, putting green and a clubhouse with a great view.
Assiginack Museum has an interesting collection of items from early life on the island. Exhibits include a furnished pioneer home, school, blacksmith shop and log barn full of farm antiques. It opens daily June 1 – Sep. 30. Other local historical buildings are the light beacon and St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
Manitowaning harbour has dockage, a boat ramp, washrooms, showers, picnic facilities, playground and a nice swimming beach beside the old Norisle ferry.
Other local attractions include McLean's Park on New England Road south of Manitowaning. This 100-acre wooded nature reserve has 8 km. of challenging mountain bike trails and a picnic shelter. High Falls is located next to a picnic area north of town on Hwy 6. The Bidwell Road is a scenic route to Manitou Lake, north of town. Manitoulin Island Dark Sky Association was initiated by Assiginack Township to protect the beauty of island nights from excessive lighting in keeping with Manitoulin’s sense of natural harmony and eco-tourism potential. Star gazing on the island is a heavenly experience!
