Spring Bay in Central Manitoulin
Some of Manitoulin’s nicest niches are located centrally between Mindemoya and Spring Bay. West of Mindemoya, a pretty picnic area is located near the outflow of the Mindemoya River. Further west, the impressive Manitoulin Cenotaph Park honours local military servicemen and women and merchant marine seamen who lost their lives in the World Wars. The park also provides washrooms and a shady picnic area. Follow Monument Road north to a lovely beach on the west shore of Mindemoya Lake before encountering Mindemoya Cave. When the cave was first discovered, human skeletons were found inside it where a native camp scene is now depicted. From Spring Bay, Perivale Road hugs the shoreline of Kagawong Lake for superb views. A boat launch is located on the southern bay. Rustic cedar rail fences are common along this route and flocks of magnificent Sandhill Cranes, North America’s second tallest bird, frequent local meadows. The Sand Road, north of Providence Bay, runs through Grimsthorpe to Dominion Bay past rolling, ancient sand dunes. The area is also home to several fine art galleries and artisan studios that are situated in idyllic landscapes overlooking Manitoulin’s shorelines.
