Fish Point Provincial Nature Reserve

Fish Point, on the southwestern tip of Pelee Island, is a 110-hectare Provincial Nature Reserve. It features dunes and the intriguing, crescent shaped sand spit that constantly shifts with water erosion along this most southerly tip of Essex Region that is inhabited. Middle Island, an uninhabited nature reserve located a bit further south, is the absolute most southern land in Canada. Dangerous rip currents can be present at the tip during windy conditions so swimming there is not recommended. Hiking and cycling trails and continuous beaches provide access to the area.

Fish Point contains old growth Carolinian forest and a marshy lagoon where birds are most easily spotted during spring and fall migrations. Rare animals such as the Eastern Fox Snake, Lake Erie Watersnake and Giant Swallowtail Butterfly make their home in the reserve. Uncommon plants such as Prickly Pear cactus and Hop trees also grow there. Fishing is very productive around the point with bass and walleye being the most plentiful species.

Nearby Mill Point exhibits glacial erosion grooves in its exposed limestone alvars. The adjacent Stone Road Alvar is one of the most significant limestone plain landscapes that holds impressive stands of Chinquapin oak, Eastern Red cedar and one of the rarest snakes in Canada, the Blue Racer. A reddish variant of the common Gray squirrel is another unusual species found on Pelee Island.
