Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary & Kennedy Woods Park

Jack Miner became the founder of the migratory waterfowl refuge system by creating the Jack Miner Migratory Bird Sanctuary in 1904. Five years later he pioneered the banding of migrating waterfowl; the recovery data was instrumental in the establishment of the Migratory Bird Treaty of 1916 between the USA and Canada as no government banding programs had been in existence at that time.

The Jack Miner Migratory Bird Foundation was established in 1931 in the United States and in 1936 in Canada to continue the good work of Jack Miner. The Foundation is a charitable organization that operates solely on grants and the generosity of private and corporation donations. The Board of Directors and staff are responsible for the ongoing operations of the Foundation.

The sanctuary offers adults and children alike a truly memorable experience to connect with nature. Visitors are able to get up close and personal to hand feed geese and ducks with barley which is supplied free. Spend some time exploring and learning about local wildlife and natural habitats on over 400 acres of natural landscape and see peacocks, exotic pheasants, wild turkeys and tundra swans. The Essex Hunting Retriever Club holds Retriever Dog Demonstrations on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm.

The Jack Miner Museum, where admission is also free, allows visitors to view 150 years of historical Miner archives and artifacts. A short walk to the original catching net as well as the burial site of Jack and Laona Miner makes the visit a unique experience.
