Muskoka Lakes Museum
The Muskoka Lakes Museum is beautifully located in Port Carling (the hub of the Muskoka Lakes) on scenic James Bartleman Island Park. The island is situated between both the large and small locks, and provides picnic tables and newly renovated washroom facilities. The island is accessed by a footbridge off the main street (Joseph Street) in the centre of the village. Parking space is on nearby village streets, behind the Library or at the Community Centre.
Several museum-wide scavenger hunts are available anytime to engage school-age children to explore and discover fun facts about Muskoka's past. Our family-friendly interactive exhibits include working dial and magneto telephones, and an old-fashioned dress-up trunk with pioneer-style clothing to try.
Explore our newly renovated First Nations gallery, complete with birch-bark canoes, a section of a life-sized wigwam, and many related artifacts. Re-live life in the pioneer era when you step over the threshold of our 140-year old log cabin. Tour our galleries and experience resort and cottage life from the past to the present. Feast your eyes on the many examples of local wooden boatbuilding, for which the area is famous.
During Canada Day on Saturday July 1st visit us on James Bartleman Island Park, enjoy FREE admission to our Open House, and try our challenging Canada Day quizz. There'll be refreshments, and free birthday cake, as well.
Our 7th annual Buttertart Festival takes place Saturday, July 14th, from 10 a.m. to 12noon. 2018 will see some culinary-related additions to this popular event.
