Port Elgin Beach & Harbour
From: May To: October
The spectacular sunsets that Port Elgin is famous for can best be seen from the harbour - a must for photographers and romantics. Free parking is conveniently located directly on the beach, which is partly sheltered by a break-wall and is very popular for swimming and windsurfing. Beach volleyball courts are set up during the summer months and playground equipment provides recreation for children. Additionally, in summer the beach is home to the gazebo that provides a lovely setting for Sunday evening bandshell concerts where audiences usually honk their car horns for applause! Visitors can find plenty of bargains and unusual treasures at the Flea Market, which is held every Wednesday at the beach during July and August. The beach and harbour have washroom and shower facilities, a fish cleaning station, sheltered berths and a launch ramp for boats. Gobles Grove also has a beach, playground and washrooms located on Saugeen Beach Road, off CAW Rd. Further south is Eidt's Grove, a quiet, secluded beach framed by dunes.
The Station & Port Elgin Railroad has a steam train that chugs along its track past the waterfront, around North Shore Park and back to the Station. The miniature engine with its brightly painted canopied coaches is a half-scale replica of an 1836 American steam locomotive, except for its propane-fired boiler. It has all the bells and whistles and employs signalmen who stop traffic at railway crossings and switch the tracks. Rides are offered at 1, 3, 5, 7:30 & 8:30 p.m., Wed. - Sun. during summer only, depending on weather. Mini-golf is also available.
